Save Time with Quick and Easy Grammar Lessons

Teaching grammar is not easy for me.  Grammar has its own entire set of state standards.  But when I go to teach it, my reading program has one worksheet to teach the entire grammar or language concept.  So I have to supplement and now I'm pulling stuff hodge-podge from wherever I can find it.

Does this sound familiar?

I spent time last year trying to come up with a routine for my grammar lessons that would make it easy to teach.  I found something that worked great for me.  I even created a set of grammar units that went with my grammar routine so that I wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel each year.

It's a four day routine.  I liked doing four days instead of five days so that I could fit it all in still when there was a holiday.  It also left Friday for fun stuff when it was a five day week.

Best of all, it only takes 10-15 minutes to do.

Here's my routine:

Day 1:  Lesson

On this day, I teach the concept.  For this, you can use a projected slideshow or a YouTube video.  This is the direct instruction for students to learn the particular grammar or language skill that you are teaching for the week.

Day 2:  Guided Practice

Now students have the chance to practice the skill they learned on day one.  I do this whole group with a projected slideshow or worksheet.  Students do the work on their whiteboards.  This way students can show me their work and I can look for common misconceptions to address before students practice it on their own.

Day 3:  Indpendent Practice

It's now time for students to practice the skill on their own.  This is a chance to use that worksheet that came with your reading program.  Interactive Google Slides are also a fun way for students to practice if you want to go the tech route.  Pick what works best for your needs.

Day 4:  Assessment

Time to assess students on the grammar skill.  This gives you the data to see if there are any parts of this skill that you need to circle back on.  For this, I love to use Google Forms because they're no prep and self grading.  They're also easy to use on any platform since you just need to give your students the link.  They also provide multiple data points to help drive your instruction.  You could also use a printed worksheet for this as well if you prefer no tech.

That's it!  Now you've got an easy routine for teaching grammar in 10-15 minutes a day.

Want to save even more time?  I've already done all of the work for you.  I've created 4th Grade grammar units for quick and easy grammar.  The units include the slideshows for the lesson and guided practice, plus printable and digital options for the independent practice and assessment.
